Abstract
This paper presents an attempt to evaluate the performance of machine-to-machine (M2M) and human-to-human (H2H) communications that coexist inside the LTE (Long-Term Evolution) system. A typical AMI network scenario is considered with DLMS/COSEM protocol-based smart meters (SMs), data concentrators (DCs), and meter data management (MDM) remote hosts as M2M devices whereas Internet services such as VoIP, HTTP browsing, FTP, video streaming, and gaming are considered as H2H applications. NS-3, an open-source discrete-event network simulator, is used to investigate the mutual impacts between M2M and H2H communications, in terms of LTE key performance indicators (KPIs) such as throughput, packet loss, and delay. A patched version of NS-3 is used to demonstrate the LTE random access channel (RACH) procedure in order to satisfy the quality of services (QOS) for the M2M and H2H services.
