Abstract
Chapter 3, “Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica,” was written by Yan Ru and translated by Xue Ping. This chapter provides a brief summary of the theoretical system of traditional Chinese medicine, explains its philosophical background (theories of Qi, yin–yang, and five phases), introduces how doctors understand, diagnose, and treat diseases, and describes how Chinese material medica is used.
