Manual of Fertility Enhancing Hysteroscopy

Abstract

Uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyomas or myomas) are the most common benign tumors of the uterus. There may be varied clinical presentations which may include abnormal uterine bleeding, dysmenorrhea, infertility, and obstetric complications. The management of uterine fibroids depends upon the number, size, and location of myomas. Various surgical and nonsurgical approaches are available to treat myomas including myomectomy either by laparotomy or using laparoscopic or hysteroscopic route. Newer techniques such as uterine artery embolization and thermal ablation of the fibroid or interventions using ultrasonic or magnetic resonance are also available now, but with limited access and availability. Submucous myomas are amenable to hysteroscopic removal. There are various techniques for hysteroscopic myomectomy, though the preferred one by most surgeons is splicing technique.
