Historical Event-Based Story Creation Support System for Fostering Historical Thinking Skill

Abstract

Historical thinking skill is a reasoning skill to analyze the historical events and infer about events that will occur in the future. In order to infer the future events, learners should understand intentions and background of people in the historical events, consider the similarity between historical events and modern situation, and infer what will be happened if the similar events are happened in the modern situation. This research focuses on the inferring phases and proposes the learning method for fostering the inferring skill for future events. In order to improve the inferring skill, it is important to consider the various problems and their future situations that can apply the actions in the historical events. Thus, this research introduces the new learning method of creating story based on the given historical event so as to derive various problem situations by learners themselves. We have also developed the learning system to support this learning method. The experiment result indicated that our learning method has a potential effect to grasping historical event from abstract point of view and understanding the condition to apply the solution in the historical events.
