Evidence-Based Child Protective Measures

This chapter discusses the implications of abuse and neglect in schools in light of the latest evidence in addition to suggesting a number of achievable preventive measures and interventions for the protection of child rights based on primary and secondary evidence. The preventive measures like workshop for parents on child development and healthy child rearing practices, extending health services to families and improving documentation system, training for health care professionals and law enforcement agencies especially for police personnel, educational programs for the teachers and guardians in schools and so on and interventions, like immediate medical examination of sexually abused children, responding to abuse sensitively by trained professionals, psychological and medical services for the victim, helping children who have a parent with a mental illness and so on as suggested, may be replicated in other social and cultural set-ups since the child protection scenario is quite similar across societies except some variations are discussed extensively in the chapter. Finally, the chapter provides a pen portrait of the limitations of the latest research which would be helpful for future researchers. It is expected that evidence-based measures would serve as an eye opener to local school administrators to the grim issue of child abuse and, consequently, would prompt them to take immediate measures in order to ensure the safety of children both at school and at home.
