Abstract
The cement sector consumes lot of natural resources and leaves a heavy environmental footprint but at the same time, these industries are also contributing towards the society and environment in India. The CSR activities have been taken by the cement industries are related to community welfare, environment protection, infrastructure development, health and sanitation, education, etc. In India, it is mandatory for the cement industry to earmark CSR fund as per environment clearance (EC) mandate under EIA. Enterprise Social Commitment made during public hearing is the mandatory compliance condition of EC for cement sector. For certain cement industries, the CSR activities are mandatory under the Companies Act along with Enterprise Social Commitment as per environment clearance. The CSR activities undertaken for compliance with EC requirement also qualify for mandatory CSR expenditure under the Companies Act. The analysis shows the various CSR activities and CSR expenditure of major cement industries have special focus on the contribution towards environment.
