Abstract
This chapter forms an introduction to the book and includes a discussion of its scope and purpose. The first part of the chapter includes a definition of the term ‘shrine’ as used in the book, followed by a discussion on the origin of shrines in Islam and their place in the modern world. The final part of the chapter provides an outline structure of the remainder of the book.
