Introduction
The word of “anchor” derives from the Latin form of ancora, where, in a broad sense, anchor is a type of device to stabilize structures, including the offshore anchors as well as soil nails to reinforce foundations, retaining walls, and slopes. This entry concentrates on the fully embedded offshore anchors, e.g., traditional fluke anchors or more recently plate anchors, used to connect a floating offshore structure to the seabed to prevent it from drifting due to wind, wave, or current.
Floating offshore structures including vessels, drilling rigs, and platforms are subjected to large environmental forces, and most rely on permanent or temporary anchoring systems to withstand these forces.
