This chapter traces the history of the Kyūshū Region (on Kyūshū Island), where Yobuko in Saga prefecture and Ikitsuki Island in Nagasaki prefecture were major stations of the Saikai Classical Whaling Base. The region went through a complex and tragic history of suppression of religions (involving Buddhist temples and Catholic churches) by the local and national shogunate governments. This chapter considers how the religious conflict affected whaling culture in the region.
