Abstract

The Hong Kong College of Medicine abandoned its decades-long quest for its own buildings and agreed to become part of the new University of Hong Kong. The University Senate held its first meeting on 28 February 1913, at which its first Vice-Chancellor, Sir Charles Eliot, recognized “the seniority of the Faculty of Medicine” within the University. Paradoxically, towards its very end, the college obtained what had eluded its grasp for more than a quarter of a century: recognition of holders of its diploma “to practice medicine and surgery.”
