Abstract
To remain competitive, Indian textile industry should reduce operating costs and enhance environmental compliance. Government should not only strive to integrate environmental goals into the national textile policy but also in the plans and programmes. Textile sector cannot have independent growth strategies that are bereft of environmental concerns arising at various points of value chain because environmental costs are proving to be a drag on its own long term growth and development. Against this backdrop, this chapter discusses the structure, performance and policy environment of Indian textile sector. It also provides an overview of the environmental concerns with regard to textile sector.
