Application and Case Study of Barrier Technology in Soil and Groundwater Remediation

Twenty Years of Research and Development on Soil Pollution and Remediation in China

Abstract

This paper introduced the barrier technology and application cases, as well as application of stabilization/solidification in China. Vertical barrier system and horizontal flexible barrier system were used to treat Zijin Mining Leachate Leaking Accident and were also used to remediate heavy metal-contaminated groundwater in a slagheap site in Huize, Yunnan province. With the implementation of the barrier system, the stockpile or valuable metals can be recycled with minimized impact to local environment, as well as reduce soil erosion.

Ex situ stabilization/solidification technology was used to remediate heavy metal-contaminated sediment in Xiawan River in Zhuzhou, Hunan province; about 50,000 m3 of sediment and soil was remediated, which was significant to reduce the heavy metal pollution loaded into Xiangjiang River and ensure the drinking water safety in Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan region. In situ stabilization/solidification technology was applied in the project of heavy metal-contaminated waste in Qingshuitang Industrial Zone, in Zhuzhou of Hunan province. About 20,000,000 m3 of industrial waste and contaminated soil were properly treated, and then the site was developed as a parking lot and green space. In order to ensure the water source safety on the central route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, about 0.16 million cubic meters of chromium-contaminated soil was remediated using ex situ stabilization/solidification technology in the demonstration project in Yunxian county in Hubei province.
