Abstract

This section discusses the most frequent forms of spatial metaphors (a subtype of orientational metaphors), as well as their ranges of meanings, primarily in terms of binary oppositions. Within the range of orientational metaphors in folksongs, the chapter discusses horizontal and vertical metaphors like near versus far, up versus down, upward movement versus downward movement within the context of love. The examples support the claim that while orientational metaphors are generally regarded as universal, they instantiate in particular image schemas in folksongs, resulting in contrasting meanings of the same orientation.
