Abstract
The first case study concerns a box beam of a railway wagon, where fatigue failures had been observed. A typical stress history was recorded during a test trip using strain gauges applied near the hot-spot, yielding the frequency distribution of nominal stress ranges during service. Special attention requires the stress magnification due to welding distortion, calculated with parametric formulae. The damage sum calculated with Miner’s rule shows remarkable increase when misalignment effects are considered. The results agree quite well with the observed fatigue life.
