Aerial stems are various or acaulescent. Leaves are varying considerably, and usually alternate or basally. Spathe are often with tubelike base. Spadix subtended by spathe. Flowers bisexual or unisexual. Fruit is a berry. Seeds are several to numerous. Eight species, belonging to different genera, are illustrated in this chapter.
