Abstract
Alismataceae, the water-plantains, in the order of Alismatales, is a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants, comprising of 11 genera and between 85 and 95 species, with cosmopolitan distribution, mostly in temperate regions of the N Hemisphere, mainly herbaceous aquatic plants. Plants are usually perennial, and occasionally rhizomatous. Stems are corm-like or stoloniferous. Leaves are linear, ovate, or sagittate. Flowers are bisexual or unisexual, and sepals and petals are usually three. Stamens are three to numerous. Ovary is superior. Carpels are 3-numerous. Fruit is usually a head of nutlets. Seeds are exalbuminous. Three species, belonging to two genera, are illustrated in this chapter.
