Abstract
In September of 2012 during Alifest, Jack Ma the founder of the world’s largest E-commerce platform, Alibaba group, decided the future of the company would focus on three core businesses ‘platform, finance, and data’. Since then, Ali has been very active in the field of finance, simultaneously extending new business, launching new products, adjusting their organizational structure and much more.
This case was prepared by Part-time Case Writer Ji Chendong as the of CEIBS (China Europe International Business School) under the guidance of Professor Zhu Xiaoming for the purpose of class discussion, as opposed to illustrating either effective or ineffective handling of an administrative situation. Ni Yingzi as research assistant of CEIBS made contribution to the case study. The English version of this case study was prepared by Ji Chendong. Note Well: In august of 2014, Alibaba group announced in the new prospectus, according the new agreement of micro finance, that they will share the per tax profits of micro finance as well, not only just with Alipay. Correspondingly, the share of pretax profits that Alibaba group received from last version of agreement were adjusted from Alipay’s 49.9% to Micro finance group’s 37.5%. In addition, Alibaba group sale small enterprise credit business to Micro Finance Service, the consideration is 321 million RMB plus 7 years annual fee in order to avoid the risk of finance and supervision.
