Afterword: Reflecting In/On Field Theory in Practice

Bourdieu’s Field Theory and the Social Sciences

Abstract

This chapter addresses reflexivity and method in employing Bourdieu’s theory of practice . It is set in an historical and conceptual context, showing how an initial epistemological vision on Bourdieu’s part was actualized in practice, and in which a range of conceptual tools were developed as a logical necessity. The resultant methodology and concepts are examined in terms of the language in which they are expressed, leading to a consideration of the relationship between research subject and object. Elements of reflexivity are explored, how operationalised and the status of the resultant knowledge. The chapter is offered as an ‘Afterword’ to the rest of the book; as a way of evaluating their use of Bourdieu and the potential future areas of research from this perspective.
