Abstract
This essay surveys the ways in which the Japanese imperial state harnessed Olympic sports as a vehicle for projecting national power and prestige before World War II. It also examines the circuitous way in which Japan reestablished itself as a peace-loving nation in the International Olympic Movement in the postwar years. It argues that Japan’s hosting 2020 Olympics betokens a discomforting trend towards reverting the prewar ‘Imperial Model’ of state-driven sports promotion and use of elite sport as a tool of statecraft.
