Inner Experience of the Chinese People

Abstract

The reform and opening-up which started in 1978 ushered in massive social changes which were not limited to the economic domain; monetization, commercialization, marketization, and capitalization quietly brought about a revolution in consumption. To call it quiet is not to suggest that the revolution was small or weak in scope, impact, or significance but to reflect the fact that it unfolded imperceptibly and concomitantly with economic development and attendant changes in social structure.
