Abstract

This chapter described the Civic District and its surrounding areas to paint the ethnographic picture of the oldest district in modern Singapore. It is the location where urban development started and all areas covered in subsequent chapters can take reference from this starting point because the rest of Singapore were once ‘peripheral’ to this core area of development. When development emanated outwards from this area, peripheral-ity gradually diminished and, in the current context, only pockets of well-conserved catchment areas and secondary forests can truly be defined as the un-urbanized periphery today.
