Abstract
The environmental health of our earth is profoundly affected by the design of our built environment. Globally traditional architecture is replete with examples of climate-responsive and environmentally sound architecture. However, the globalization in the modern and contemporary architecture (ubiquitous built form irrespective of climate of the place) led to growing energy demands and consequent environmental degradation. The building professionals are, therefore, urged to adopt principles of the environmentally sustainable design and examine how it does (or does not) relate to their everyday practice. The climate-responsive architecture is precursor to the sustainable architecture, but the latter subsumes the theories and knowledge produced through the former. This chapter presents an overview of climate-responsive and sustainable architecture and its significance in the present day architectural practice.
Susan Maxman, FAIA, in 1993: “We have the knowledge, we have the riches, we have the power. What is called for is a profound shift in the way we regard this planet and everything on it. Exploitation must be replaced by stewardship. And for stewardship to extend its healing hand, we must act responsibly.”
