Abstract

Several clusters of bonak-dār ’s shops specializing in the wholesale trading of apparel products can be found in the south of Tehran city. Bonak-dārs accept apparel products temporarily from firms, put them on sale, determine the price in accordance with supply and demand, and see the products off if sold. In this sense, the real market participants are the producers and the retailers between whom the right of ownership of merchandize is transferred. The main role the bonak-dār plays is not to sell individual commodities as wholesale but to provide a “place” that brings sellers and buyers together, as if the bonak-dār were “an auctioneer” in the market. This is the function that responds to the extreme minuteness and anonymity of the apparel-producing firms.
