Abstract
This chapter focuses on Zhang Yimous’s “martial arts trilogy”: Hero (2002), House of Flying Daggers (2004) and Curse of the Golden Flower (2006). It examines the ways in which Zhang was responding to two increasingly powerful forces within the Chinese cinematic landscape—the growing youth audience and the appeal of Hollywood. It also attempts to shed light on how the director’s family background and his experience during the Cultural Revolution influenced the themes of those films.
