Abstract
The MRI scan on the next page shows a small tumour arising from the nerve which serves the vestibular system (for balance). There are several important cranial nerves at the intersection of the cerebellum and the brainstem. These nerves are the facial (7th) nerve and the vestibulocochlear (8th) nerve, which supplies balance and hearing. Doctors call these nerves the 7th and 8th cranial nerves. There are 12 cranial nerves in total on either side of the brainstem. From the 8th nerve, the vestibular part is for balance and the cochlear part is for hearing.
