Abstract
Research output is an important aspect to evaluate effectiveness of research investment. Following the fast-speed growth of research investment in Chinese universities, the status of inputs and outputs, as well as the associations between inputs and outputs, are received much more attention. In this chapter, we will represent the overall research production status of 211Us from the perspective of input and output, and uncover and discuss the underlying logics. Meanwhile, the descriptive statistics analysis in this chapter is also a basic for the following chapters.

Notes
- 1.
In the remaining chapters, we will follow this approach, to do the analysis subject to the two categories, NEAM and HSS disciplines respectively.
- 2.
In this chapter, we mainly do some descriptive statistics on research input and output indicators which will be used as variables in Chaps. 4, 5 and 6. In order to make it easier to be understood by readers, we give a brief introduction here to the sample and indicator system. Please refer to Sect. 1 in Chap. 4 for the detailed description on the sample and indicator system.
- 3.
Considering the small value of average of TOPESI and its smaller differences across 211Us, we don’t calculate the per capita TOPESI.
- 4.
Since TOPESI articles are very few, the outcomes of per capita TOPESI indicator is not reported here.
- 5.
According to “Evaluation Report on the Disciplinary Competitiveness of World-Class Universities and Institutions (2014–2015)”, Tsinghua University is ranked first among all Chinese universities in the number of highly cited papers, but from a global perspective, its rank would slide to 81st.
