Abstract
A third generation philosopher in the interpretative line founded by Confucius , Mencius’ thoughts on the subject of ethics extended further into political domains than did the Master’s. This is seen, for example, in the emphasis that he gave to the significance of a government structure based on an ethic of “humaneness” 仁 (ren), which signifies the central Confucian concept of moral conduct in its original and primary sense.
