Abstract
Cellular communication architecture is the turning point in wireless communication technologies based on the concept of spatial multiplexing. The three major problems in planning spatial multiplexing are: (i) elimination of interference, (ii) increasing capacity, and (iii) providing wide area coverage. This chapter addresses all these problems in details with mathematical underpinnings. Signal interference problem cannot be eliminated completely. However, by analyzing the relative strengths of co-channel cells, it is possible to find spatial multiplexing that assures optimum signal to noise ratio for communication to take place. Handover provides continuous coverage as a mobile device with an active connection moves from one cell to another. Channel assignment is a closely related issue for handover to occur. This chapter addresses all the issues listed above.
