Abstract
In the previous chapter, by focusing on China’s power sector, we demonstrated how complex modelling can be used to deliver insights into optimal pathways for the future development and evolution. The analysis indicated how the consideration of regional and seasonal variations in natural primary energy resources, wind and solar, can materially alter the results and implications. In this chapter, we begin to explore how constraints on another natural resource, water, may impact the future development of the China’s energy sector, particularly in the coal industry, that could, in turn, place hurdles in achieving optimal results in the power sector.
