Abstract
IT industry has not been a very old industry in India. Its historical roots can be traced back to the era of the 1970s and 1980s. After the economic reforms of 1991, service sector in general and IT industry in particular have grown at a fast pace and has been contributing significantly to country’s GDP and skilled employment. IT industry has also been cause as well as consequence of globalisation and this chapter traces the industry’s origins and the recent trends.
