“Reverse Discrimination” and “Color-Blind” Racism

This chapter first looks at the case of “reverse discrimination” against a white male. The U.S. Supreme Court, by a narrow margin of five to four, upheld the plaintiff’s argument. This did not end the quota system but changed its reasoning from compensation for past discrimination to preparing for a more diversified U.S. society. Meanwhile, the so-called racially preferential welfare system was severely criticized and “workfare,” in which job-hunting efforts became the prerequisite for its recipients, replaced the traditional system under the Clinton administration. Finally, I analyze the “model minority” discourse, along with “color-blind racism,” the latest version of the efforts made by the decreasing white majority to reinforce their political power.
