Abstract

Polyphenols are important antioxidants molecules which are used in preventing the diseases like cancer, cardiovascular, neuro diseases, inflammation and high blood pressure. Polyphenols are present in abundant quantity in Orange peels. The aim of the current research is to compare the total polyphenols content extracted by solvent extraction and microbial assisted extraction using Aspergillus niger. Three different varieties of oranges (Coorg, Nagpur, Kinnow) were selected and the peels from each of these samples were dried under different conditions (Sun dried, Freeze dried and Oven dried). Aqueous methanol mixture was used for solvent extraction and Microbial assisted extraction was performed by using Aspergillus niger as organism with incubating temperature of 25° for 48 h. Total polyphenols were estimated by using Folin Ciocalteu spectrophotometer method and some of the major polyphenols were identified and quantified by using C18 Column, PDA detector in HPLC. Microbial assisted extraction proved to be better than solvent at laboratory conditions. Coorg orange peel showed a highest polyphenols content in both extractions.
