Abstract

In this chapter, I have made an attempt to look into the problems and challenges I have faced in developing the Bangla synsets that will stand as conceptual equivalents for the Hindi synsets used in the IndoWordNet. The Bangla synsets that I have developed so far are to be represented in the IndoWordNet, which is meant to be linked up with the unique concepts represented in the IndoWordNet—a digital semantic net that aims at representing parallel concepts available in the EuroWordNet and the Princeton WordNet of English of the Pennsylvania University, USA. In this chapter, I have also tried to highlight some of the crucial problems relating to Hindi to Bangla translation of sentences used to elaborate the concepts captured in the Hindi synsets. There are many problems and challenges in translation between the languages (e.g., lexical divergences, convergences, reordering of phrases, ambiguities, and lexical mismatches), which have been briefly addressed in this chapter due to paucity of space. Moreover, our primary focus is on the problems related to synset generation rather than on the problems of translation in general from Hindi to Bangla.
