Abstract
In this chapter, I focus on three features. First, I adopt a comparative Sino-Japanese angle in examining coal railway development before moving on to country-specific studies in later chapters. Second, I acquired historical resources like commemorative stamps to reconstruct the historical narrative of railway development through the use of material artefacts. Material artefacts displayed in the museums were important because early modern technologies like steam locomotives are no longer operational in contemporary Japan or Hong Kong. Third, through multilingual sources (Japanese-language, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese and English publications, maps and documents), I was able to examine the subject matter from eclectic perspectives and perceptions. Museums, stamps and archives are socializing agents with their own historical narratives inserted into the public sphere.
