Nanoclay Reinforced Polymer Composites

Part of the book series: Engineering Materials ((ENG.MAT.))

Abstract

In this chapter, a brief introduction on natural fibers (types, properties and advantages) is presented first to show their application in various industries. Then, nanoclay as one the most widely used fillers is presented. The structures, properties and applications of this filler are described with examples related to the nanocomposite industries. Then, the combination of nanoclay with synthetic and natural fibers to produce hybrid composite systems is reviewed showing recent achievements and activities in this field. Foamed materials are then introduced. The basic concepts of foaming are discussed followed by the effect of adding particles on structures and properties. Finally, composites and hybrid foams based on nanoclay and natural fiber is reviewed followed by a conclusion and openings for future works.
