Abstract

One of the phenomena occurring in TBCs during their operation is the appearance of an Al2O3 layer, referred to as TGO in literature. Its occurrence is related to the presence of coating surface porosity, and consequently with the possibility of oxygen accessing the boundary between top coat (TC) and BC. One of the elements comprising the bond coat is aluminium. Therefore, oxygen that penetrates into a TBC system causes the formation of a thin (several micrometres) layer of aluminium oxide, whose thickness gradually increases in time.
