Abstract
Ethnic style characterizes a culture which celebrates heritage and origin and has evolved over a period of time. Ethnic style is influenced by factors such as availability of a wide variety of materials, production methods, popular designers, organizations, cross cultural influences, innovations, and sustainable practices. Ethnic styles have evolved geographically around Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Latin and Central America, North America, and Europe. Acculturation has helped in not only westernization of clothing but also produces cultural diversity and heterogeneity. Availability of sustainable raw materials (natural fibers, natural dyes, recycled materials) combined with sustainable manufacturing/chemical processing/surface embellishments (use of resist bases, hand painting, itkat, batik, bandhi, natural dyes, and effluent treatments) have added value to ethnic styles. Artisanality combined with the creativity of the designers and involvement of organizations such as Abury champions have created a platform for the evolution of sustainable ethnic styles. Generational changes (Generation X and Generation Z) can be seen as a positive influence and ethnic styles avail themselves a great chance to co-exist with modern fashion concepts.
