Combination by Hyperthermia and Radiation and Chemotherapy: Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Abstract

Soft tissue sarcoma is an extremely rare disease with an annual incidence of 3 per 100,000 people, accounting for 1 % or less of all malignant tumors. High-grade soft tissue sarcoma requires multidisciplinary therapy including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, though surgery remains the primary therapy. Nowadays more than 90 % of patients undergo surgery preserving the affected limb. However, postoperative local recurrence and loss of function after wide excision remains a concern. We have performed radio-hyperthermo-chemotherapy (RHC) for patients with high-grade soft tissue sarcoma with the goal of improving local control, reducing the resection margin, improving postoperative function, and controlling distant metastasis by improving chemotherapy sensitivity. In this chapter, we first reviewed the previous reports of hyperthermia for soft tissue sarcomas, and discuss our treatment protocol and treatment outcomes.
