Abstract
This chapter introduces the research problem that the research described within this book sought to address, specifically the nature of motivation to learn of students situated within online learning environments. It outlines why motivation to learn online is an important consideration that is receiving growing attention. It then describes the specific research aims that provided the direction for the investigation that is reported in subsequent chapters.
