Reading Against the Stream: Using the Wrong Strategies to Acquire L2 Literacy

This chapter expands upon the idea of how script-specific word level decoding strategies in the L1 can negatively impact the development of word-level decoding skills in a foreign language whose script favors different word-decoding strategies. The author describes a case study of low-level proficiency Taiwanese students of English whose attempts at English literacy acquisition were being stymied by their lack of awareness that the new script required the development of altogether different processing styles, as well as the efforts undertaken to ameliorate the students’ L2 reading abilities. Other cases from the literature are used to build a case for the prevalence of this word-level processing problem.
