Default Reading Strategies: English and Chinese

Abstract

This chapter begins with a review of influential theoretical models of reading, focusing on how meaning is derived from text, and discusses how the specific models pertain to both Chinese and English. The issue of readers’ default or preferred word/character-level decoding strategies is discussed with particular emphasis on how these “default” word-processing strategies could likely differ between languages with different scripts as the unique features of various orthographies may increase or decrease the relative efficiency of specific strategies. Possible default processing strategies from both Chinese and English are elucidated from the research literature, followed by a detailed accounting of a study conducted by the author to ascertain default processing strategies by L1 speakers of Chinese, and another on English L1 students of Chinese which demonstrates how L1 default word decoding strategies can negatively impact L2 reading ability.
