Abstract
During the period from 1945 to 1991, Macedonia was a constituent republic of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. On September 8, 1991, the people of the Republic of Macedonia decided through a referendum to separate from the Yugoslav federation, thus founding the sovereign and independent state it is today. According to its Constitution, the Republic of Macedonia is a parliamentary democracy.
