Abstract

Post-War Taiwanese history can be divided into two periods: The one-party dominance period under the KMT party-state between 1945 and 1987, and the democratization period from 1988 onwards. In the first period, the KMT was the overwhelmingly dominant player in a one-party system; in the second, multiple players competed for political power, per the rules of electoral politics.
