Abstract

Informal polls, which I’ve taken across various gender, ethnic, age, and religious groups, in person and on social media, confirm that my own experience (which was the worst) may have been, if not universal, at least representative, in mood if not in details. Each of us has had a different subjective experience, a particular family culture, distinctive friends, and various layers to our respective identities. One thing appears to be true: being fourteen sucks.
