Part of the book series: Mathematics Teaching and Learning ((MTAL))

Abstract

This chapter is the third of three consecutive chapters in this volume that focus on students’ reasoning as they compare the two fractions, 1/2 and 1/3, and determine the fractional difference between the two fractions using Cuisenaire rods to model their ideas. This chapter explores in depth the students’ reasoning about the concept of a unit as they move from thinking of a single model to considering two models concurrently.
