Abstract

In mathematics education, sign mediation is an important concept for describing classroom events specifically and the relation between situations and ‘meanings’ more generally. In philosophical terms, mediation is required whenever there are two opposing terms that cannot be connected unless there is a third thing. Classical oppositions include body and mind, an opposition that Descartes linked by mean of the pineal gland.
