Abstract
1986. Two of the first students I worked with, whom I’ll call “Lola” and “Jason,” came from very different backgrounds, were at very different stages of life, but had similar goals to use their degrees for professional advancement. Lola was just starting a college education in her late 40s. She had always worked with children and wanted an associate degree as a step toward pursuing certification to open her own day care center.
