Abstract

Over the course of the past fifteen years, the term ‘world-class university’ has come to dominate the global discourse on higher education. At heart, the term refers to high-performing, research-intensive higher education institutions which, for the most part, are able to access large amounts of funds, for example, to hire top staff, or acquire the most advanced scientific equipment.
