Abstract

I was born and spent my first nine years in the Boulevard Housing Project in the East New York section of Brooklyn, a working class section of New York City. Both of my parents were Holocaust survivors and the Holocaust became a major theme of my childhood. As I grew into adulthood, I learned a sense of social justice from my parents, which would come to shape much of my work as a sociologist.
