Abstract
This chapter considers the adequacy of the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG) Part 1. It examines Portuguese academics’ perceptions of how they are implemented in higher education. We perform a factor analysis to find out how the formal structure of the ESG Part 1 compares with the factor structure resulting from its practical implementation. The main goal is to contribute to the discussion of the ESG Part 1 and to help improve it as a framework for internal quality assurance systems.
